Albert enlisted into the Suffolk Regiment in May 1915 giving his age as 19, although he was actually only 16.  He was sent to France with the 7th Battalion in December 1917 and wounded the following May.

He received a gun shot wound to his leg and arm and was sent home.  He was medically discharged in October 1918 and returned to work as a stockman on a local farm.

He died at the family home at 19 Long Bessels fifteen months later of tuberculosis, aged 21.

Albert is one of five former soldiers who died at home in 1920/21. His death was attributed to his war service and so he was buried at Hadleigh Cemetery and given a War Graves headstone. Each year, school children from local schools gather at the graves in the cemetery and hear the story of Albert and others who died during the war.
